I like the book design. This book is really cool! It tells the story of Mansa Abu Bakr, a smart and curious king who ruled the Mali Empire before the famous Mansa Musa. I loved how the book shows Abu Bakr's love for learning and exploring.
I am making a history curriculum for my elementary school aged daughter. History such as this isn't spoken on in history classes, but it is in mine. This is a great way to start my history curriculum of American history in the west Colonial times. Thank you. It's on now, lol
The Journey of Mansa Abu Bakr before Columbus, taught me a bit about Mali history, and one of the kings who was curious about the world outside his kingdom. He sent out explorers, and then embarked on a western journey himself, with 200 vessels across the Atlantic and may have reached the Carribean before Columbus. The important messages from this beautifully illustrated book is to dream big, and to remember, communicate & celebrate local history and stories from our own cultures and others too.
I didn't pay close attention when I bought it and thought the book was for adults. When I leafed through it, I realized that it was actually intended for a different audience. Nevertheless, I have to say: it's really nicely done, with beautiful illustrations, and pleasant to look at. Even though it wasn't quite what I expected, it was nice to leaf through.
I love how it shines a ray on African history seldom told in children's books. My daughter was captivated by the adventure and encouraged by Abu Bakr's bravery. This is a beautifully presented story that makes history very stimulating and significant for kids.
